About

Cinder Hill Campground is located along the shores of East Lake within the collapsed caldera of Newberry Volcano in Newberry National Volcanic Monument. As the largest campground in the caldera with 110 sites, it offers a mix of lakeside sites and those within easy walking distance of the beach. The campground is well-suited for both RVs and tents, with a maximum spur length of 85 feet accommodating larger rigs. East Lake sits within the five-mile-diameter caldera that encircles both East Lake and Paulina Lake. The 1,044-acre lake reaches 180 feet at its deepest point and features thermal vents and hot springs along its northeast edge that create a highly productive ecosystem. The lake supports excellent fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, and Kokanee salmon, with two boat launch areas in the campground. A 10 mph speed limit keeps the lake peaceful for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. The Cinder Hill Trailhead within the campground provides access to the Crater Rim Trail, considered one of the finest high country trails in the area with vast stretches of forest, deserts, and mountains. Nearby attractions include the Big Obsidian Flow, a 1,300-year-old lava flow that is Oregon's youngest, and Lava River Cave, Oregon's longest continuous lava tube. The surrounding wilderness supports diverse wildlife including black bear, bighorn sheep, deer, and migratory birds.
