About

Cinder Hill Campground occupies a scenic position on the eastern shore of East Lake, nestled within the caldera of Newberry Volcano in Deschutes National Forest. The campground offers 110 standard nonelectric sites, many with direct proximity to the lakeshore and others within easy walking distance of the beach area. Two boat launch ramps within the campground provide access to East Lake, which supports rainbow trout, brown trout, and Kokanee salmon with a 10 mph speed limit. The Cinder Hill Trailhead provides direct access to the Newberry Crater Trail #3958, considered one of the finest high country trails in the area with connections to other trails throughout the monument. Nearby attractions include the Big Obsidian Flow, a 1,300-year-old lava flow of obsidian and pumice with a 1-mile interpretive trail, and Lava River Cave, the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Vault toilets are provided throughout the campground. Drinking water is available via hand pump but is typically turned off by the end of September. The campground transitions to first-come, first-served starting October 1 until the seasonal closure.
