About

Chief Paulina Horse Camp provides equestrian access to one of Oregon's most remarkable volcanic landscapes. Situated near Paulina Lake within the collapsed caldera of Newberry Volcano, the campground offers 14 sites equipped with either double or quadruple horse corrals and parking areas rebuilt in 2018 to accommodate larger vehicle-trailer combinations. The campground serves as a base for exploring the monument's extensive trail system on horseback. The Crater Rim Trail, considered one of the premier high-country rides in the region, circles the caldera with sweeping views of forests, lava flows, and high desert terrain. Riders can also access trails leading to the Big Obsidian Flow and other volcanic features. Facilities are basic but functional: vault toilets and a horse water pump are available, but there is no potable drinking water, hookups, or cell service. Certified weed-free feed is mandatory to prevent invasive species spread. Two resorts near Paulina Lake offer supplies and dining options.
