Wai'anapanapa State Park campground occupies one of Maui's most striking coastal settings, where jet-black lava cliffs meet the Pacific. The park's famous Pa'iloa black sand beach is formed from volcanic basite, and the surrounding area features sea arches, blowholes, freshwater caves, and ancient Hawaiian burial sites. Campers can explore the coastal trail that winds past dramatic geological formations and through native hala and naupaka vegetation. The campground offers grassy tent sites as well as basic cabins with full bathrooms and hot water. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor beach showers, drinking water, and picnic areas with BBQ grills. The park operates from 7am to 6pm daily, though overnight campers have extended access. Check-in for camping is between 3pm and 6pm, with checkout at 10am. All visitors except Hawaii residents must make advance reservations through the state park system. The campground is located just off the Hana Highway, about three miles north of Hana town. The narrow, winding road to Hana requires careful driving, and the final approach to the park involves a short access road.

Directions

From Kahului, take the Hana Highway (Route 360) east for approximately 52 miles. About 3 miles before reaching Hana town, turn left onto Wai'anapanapa Road and follow it to the park entrance. The drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours due to the winding, narrow road with numerous one-lane bridges.
