About
Paint Creek Recreation Area sits at 1,760 feet elevation in Greene County within a mountain cove along Paint Creek in Cherokee National Forest. The campground features widely-spaced campsites, most with streamside views and well-screened by native vegetation including rhododendron, hemlock, and laurel. Paint Creek is stocked seasonally with rainbow trout by TWRA, making it popular for fly fishing, swimming, and wading. Two hiking trails begin within walking distance: Paint Mountain Trail (#7) and Paint Creek Trail (#10). The Paint Creek corridor offers excellent biking opportunities to Hot Springs, North Carolina, and several scenic auto loops. Nearby attractions include Kelly, Dudley, and Ricker Falls visible from Forest Road 41, Paint Creek Pond for warm water fishing, and the French Broad River with Class I-III rapids. Bear safety is strictly enforced. All food and trash must be stored in hard-sided containers or vehicles when not in use, and attractants are never allowed in tents. Violations are ticketable offenses, and unattended food or trash will be impounded by staff. The access road from Rollins Chapel Road is narrow with sharp curves.
Directions
From Greeneville, take TN 70 south for 11.2 miles, turn right on Rollins Chapel Road and follow the signs to Paint Creek. Access road is narrow with some sharp curves.
