About

Horse Creek Pavilion Day Use is located eight miles north of Greeneville, Tennessee, nestled into a hardwood cove at the base of the Bald Mountains at 1,720 feet elevation. The centerpiece pavilion was constructed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1455 from Camp Cordell Hull. The recreation area sits beside Horse Creek and provides access to several recreational opportunities. The short Scarlet Oak Trail (#181) offers a 0.2-mile walk through the surrounding forest. For more primitive hiking experiences, three trails are available in the adjacent Sampson Mountain Wilderness. Horse Creek provides opportunities for fishing and water play. Additional camping and picnic sites are located in the nearby Horse Creek Recreation Area campground. The area is close to historic Greeneville, home of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, and Tusculum College, founded in 1794 as Tennessee's oldest college. The Andrew Johnson Homestead and several museums are located in the Greeneville area.
