About
Located approximately 12 miles southeast of Alamogordo at the dramatic western escarpment of the Sacramento Mountains, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park campground provides a desert basecamp with exceptional scenery. The campground features 57 developed sites including 16 with water and electric hookups (30 and 50 amp), 24 dry camping sites, and several ADA-accessible options. Sites are nestled among desert grasses and cacti with varying elevations that create natural privacy. The park preserves the historic Oliver Lee Ranch and the unique riparian ecosystem of Dog Canyon, where cottonwood-shaded pools offer a stark contrast to the surrounding desert. Campers can explore the short Riparian Nature Trail or tackle the challenging Dog Canyon Trail ascending into the mountains. A visitor center provides interpretive exhibits on the area's natural and cultural history.
Directions
From Alamogordo, take US-54 south for approximately 10 miles, then turn east onto Dog Canyon Road. The park entrance is about 4 miles on Dog Canyon Road.
