About

Mount Mitchell State Park Campground sits within North Carolina's first state park, established to protect the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. The nine-site tent-only campground is located approximately two-thirds of the way from the park office to the 6,684-foot summit, providing a base camp for exploring the highest mountains in the eastern United States. The campground operates seasonally from May through October when weather conditions permit access. Due to the high elevation, temperatures are significantly cooler than surrounding areas, and weather can change rapidly. The park is accessible via NC Highway 128 off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 355. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and grill, with vault toilets and water spigots located in the campground area. Mount Mitchell offers several hiking trails, including the summit trail and connections to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The observation deck at the summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains on clear days. The park also features a museum, gift shop, and restaurant during peak season. Reservations are handled through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system.

Directions

From the Blue Ridge Parkway, take the exit at milepost 355 onto NC Highway 128. Follow NC 128 north for approximately 5 miles to the park entrance. The campground is located along the park road between the office and summit.
