About
Briar Bottom Group Campground is nestled at the base of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, within the stunning Pisgah National Forest. Situated at an elevation of 3,040 feet, the campground offers six group sites, each accommodating up to 50 people, making it an ideal destination for organized groups seeking a mountain getaway. The South Toe River flows near the campground, providing excellent opportunities for trout fishing and scenic enjoyment. Hikers will find plenty to explore, with trails ranging from easy half-mile forest walks to the challenging 5.6-mile climb up Mt. Mitchell. The 6,684-foot Mt. Mitchell towers over the area, surrounded by the high peaks of the Black Mountains. The lush Appalachian forest is rich with wildlife, native plants, and breathtaking scenery. Adjacent Black Mountain Campground offers additional recreational facilities including a playing field, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pit. The campground is reservation-only and operates seasonally from mid-April through October. Groups seeking a peaceful mountain retreat with access to some of the best hiking and natural scenery in the eastern United States will find Briar Bottom an excellent choice.
Directions
From Asheville, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto Highway 19 east toward Burnsville. Follow Highway 19 to Micaville and turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course. Turn right on South Toe River Road and follow signs to Black Mountain Campground. Access Briar Bottom through the main gate at Black Mountain Campground.
