About
Black Mountain Campground is located in the Appalachian Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, sitting at the base of Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. At an elevation of 3,040 feet, the campground borders the South Toe River and is surrounded by the lush Appalachian forest rich with wildlife and scenery. The campground features 40 sites total, with 37 primitive campsites and 3 sites with electric hookups. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, tent pad, lantern post, and campfire ring with grill. The facility provides hot showers, flush toilets, and a small camp store offering firewood, ice, and souvenirs. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, with the South Toe River offering excellent trout fishing right at the campground. Hikers can choose from a variety of trails, ranging from leisurely half-mile forest walks to a challenging 5.6-mile hike to the summit of Mt. Mitchell. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Mitchell State Park are easily accessible for scenic drives and additional exploration of the Black Mountains.
Directions
From Asheville, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto Highway 19 east towards Burnsville. Follow Highway 19 to Micaville and turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course. Turn right on South Toe River Road and follow signs to Black Mountain Campground.
