About

Black Mountain Campground occupies a prime location in Pisgah National Forest at the base of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet. The campground sits at an elevation of 3,040 feet along the South Toe River, providing a lush Appalachian forest setting rich with wildlife and scenic beauty. The campground features approximately 46 primitive campsites plus a few sites with electric hookups, as well as group camping at the adjacent Briar Bottom Group Site. Facilities include modern bathrooms with flush toilets, hot showers (additional fee), a small camp store selling firewood and ice, and an amphitheater with weekend programs during summer months. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, tent pad, lantern post, and fire ring with grill. Recreation opportunities abound with the South Toe River adjacent for trout fishing and tubing. Hikers can choose from multiple trails including a leisurely half-mile forest walk or the challenging 5.6-mile route to Mt. Mitchell's summit. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Mitchell State Park are nearby for scenic driving.
