About

Hexacuba Shelter is a hexagonal log shelter built and maintained by the Dartmouth Outing Club, located on the southern shoulder of Mt. Cube in the White Mountain National Forest. This backcountry shelter accommodates up to 8 people and is accessed via a 0.2-mile spur trail off the Appalachian Trail (also known as Kodiak Trail in this section), positioned 1.6 miles south of Mt. Cube's south peak. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required. A privy is provided on-site, but campers should be prepared with water treatment methods as the water source is a small brook at the spur path junction that may be unreliable, especially during dry periods. This is a true backcountry camping experience where visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for primitive conditions. The shelter's hexagonal design provides a unique backcountry structure for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers and section hikers exploring the White Mountain National Forest. As with all backcountry shelters, availability is not guaranteed, so hikers should have backup camping plans.
