About

Indian Road Group Use Shelter is located at the southern end of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, positioned along the Missouri River between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountain ranges just north of Townsend. The 33' x 44' covered shelter can accommodate up to 75 people and is attached to Indian Road Campground. The facility includes 8 picnic tables and 2 grills under the shelter, with vault toilets located just across the parking lot. Young willows line a small fishing pond designated for children and individuals with disabilities, while mature cottonwoods provide shade in the grassy areas around the pavilion. The area is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Canyon Ferry Reservoir offers year-round recreational opportunities including fishing for rainbow trout, perch, ling, and walleye. Water activities range from swimming and sailing to motor-boating and jet skiing in summer, while winter brings ice fishing, ice boating, and skating. The nearby Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area, managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, provides excellent opportunities for bird watching and paddling during permitted seasons. The reservoir features 33,500 surface acres of water and 96 miles of shoreline, with three marinas providing services including boat launches, camping, and supplies.
