Millerton Lake State Recreation Area sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Fresno, impounding the San Joaquin River to create a 47-mile shoreline popular with boaters, anglers, and swimmers. The campground spans six distinct loops on the North Shore, each offering a different camping experience. Meadows Loop operates year-round and provides full hookup sites alongside standard sites with access to flush restrooms and coin-operated showers. Fort Miller, Mono, and Rocky Point loops open seasonally from April through September and offer standard sites without hookups but with modern restroom facilities. For more primitive camping, Dumna Strands and Valley Oak loops provide tent-only sites with chemical toilets. The park also features two group camps accommodating up to 75 and 40 people respectively, plus a horse camp with stalls and RV parking. Temperance Flat offers boat-in camping for up to 25 vessels when water levels permit. Each standard campsite includes a fire ring, and campers should bring their own firewood as none is sold on-site. The surrounding recreation area provides extensive day-use facilities including multiple picnic areas, swimming beaches, and boat launches. The park features hiking trails including the Blue Oak Trail, portions of which are currently closed due to storm-related erosion. Fishing opportunities include bass, catfish, and trout depending on season. The historic courthouse facility offers educational exhibits about the area's past.

Directions

From Fresno, take State Route 41 north to State Route 145. Turn east on SR-145 and continue approximately 6 miles to the park entrance at 5290 Millerton Road, Friant.
