About
Middle Quartz Campground is a remote, rustic campground located in the Gunnison National Forest, approximately 6 miles east of Pitkin, Colorado. Situated in Colorado's historic mineral belt that extends into Leadville, the campground is surrounded by four-wheel drive roads created by miners over a century ago. These roads are now popular routes for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts during the summer and fall months. The campground features 10 sites and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Access requires driving east on Forest Road 765 (Cumberland Pass Road) for 1 mile, then turning right onto Forest Road 767 for an additional 5 miles. The campground is near the historic Alpine Tunnel site, offering opportunities for exploration and photography of Colorado's mining heritage. Visitors should come prepared for primitive camping conditions. No potable water is available on-site, so campers must bring adequate supplies. Vault toilets are provided. The campground operates seasonally from late May through early October, weather dependent, with nightly camping fees of $14 per site. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The remote location and light usage make it ideal for campers seeking solitude and access to off-highway vehicle trails.
