About

Gold Creek Campground sits at approximately 10,000 feet elevation on the southeastern boundary of the Fossil Ridge Wilderness Area in Colorado's Gunnison National Forest. This free, primitive campground serves as a basecamp for accessing the alpine lakes and trails of the Fossil Ridge Recreation Management Area. No mechanized or motorized vehicles are permitted within the wilderness boundaries, making it a haven for hikers, backpackers, and equestrians. The campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis with no reservations or fees required. Facilities are limited to vault toilets; there is no potable water, so campers must pack in all drinking water. The surrounding landscape of spruce, fir, and aspen trees provides a classic Rocky Mountain highland setting. Activities from the campground include hiking on the Gold Creek Trail, fishing in nearby alpine lakes, mountain biking, horseback riding, and accessing OHV trails and four-wheel drive roads in the surrounding area. Access requires traveling 7 miles on Forest Road 771 from Ohio City. Winter access depends on road conditions with no winter road maintenance provided. The campground typically opens in late May depending on snowmelt and closes in early fall.

Directions

From Gunnison, Colorado, take US Highway 50 east for 11.5 miles to Parlin. Turn left onto Colorado Road 76 and travel 8.7 miles to Ohio City. Then travel north for 7 miles on Forest Road 771.
