About
Located in the remote Bighorn Basin near Hyattville, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site preserves one of the most significant prehistoric sites in the Northern Plains. A 700-foot sandstone bluff displays hundreds of petroglyphs and pictographs created by Native Americans over 2,000 years ago, while archaeological excavations revealed over 60 cultural levels spanning Paleoindian, Archaic, and Prehistoric periods. The campground features 32 individual sites along Medicine Lodge Creek, including 28 reservable sites, 4 first-come, first-served sites, and 1 ADA-accessible site. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available, though water is limited to a single hydrant near the Site Cabin from October through April. The park also offers a self-guided interpretive trail, an ADA-accessible fishing pier, public horse corrals, and interpretive cabins open seasonally. Camping fees are $11 per night for Wyoming residents and $19.80 for non-residents. The park is open year-round from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., though interpretive cabins close October 31 through April 30. Reservations are required May 1 through September 30 via reserve.wyoming.gov or by calling 877-996-7275.
