About
Grapevine Campground is located on the banks of the Gila River in Gila National Forest, where the East and West forks of the river converge to form the mainstem of the Gila. The campground takes its name from an actual old grapevine that still exists at the site, now protected by a large chain. The area features beautiful cliffs serving as a dramatic natural backdrop. Historically, this was a primitive camping area with approximately 20 first-come, first-served sites offering free camping. The remote location is accessible via a winding road from Silver City that climbs forested hills before descending to the river, approximately 42 miles from town. The steep downgrade road into the campground makes access challenging for long vehicles. The campground provides access to hiking and fishing along the Gila River, and is located about 5 miles south of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Doc Campbell's General Store is approximately 4 miles south. The area is popular with visitors seeking a remote riverside camping experience in the heart of the Gila.
Directions
