About
Grapevine Campground is located in the heart of the Gila wilderness, approximately 40 miles north of Silver City along New Mexico Highway 15. The campground occupies a scenic spot where the three forks of the Gila River come together, offering campers a riverside experience with dramatic cliff formations as a backdrop. Before its closure, the campground was known for its shaded sites right next to the river and its proximity to Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The campground was severely damaged in July 2022 when monsoon storms sent floods of water, rock, soil, and debris rushing down the East Fork from the Black Fire burn scar, washing away portions of the campground that held campsites. The Forest Service has received $16.5 million in Black Fire recovery funding, with approximately $3 million earmarked for recreational facility repairs including campgrounds. Options under consideration include reducing the campground's footprint to retain sites outside the floodplain or converting the site to day-use only while enlarging nearby campgrounds to compensate for lost camping opportunities. No reopening timeline has been announced.
Directions
