About
Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park Horse Camp is a specialized equestrian campground situated within North Dakota's oldest state park, established in 1907. The horse camp provides four primitive campsites with water hookups and eight dedicated corrals for horse boarding. Located near the confluence of the Missouri and Heart Rivers in Morton County, the campground offers direct access to approximately 19 miles of multi-use trails including the Scouts Trail System, Bloody Knife Trail, and Little Sioux Trail that wind through native prairie, shrublands, and green ash woodlands. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the park's rich cultural and military history. Within the park, visitors can tour the reconstructed earthlodges of the On-A-Slant Indian Village, where Mandan people thrived for two centuries, and the Victorian-style Custer House along with military structures from the 1870s cavalry post. The trail system offers breathtaking vistas of the river bottoms and surrounding hills, with terrain ranging from hard-packed single-track to grass surfaces with manageable grades. Equestrian visitors must purchase horse passes and are responsible for corral upkeep. The campground provides a primitive camping experience focused on horseback riding through historically significant landscapes along the Northern Plains.
