About
Lac Vieux Desert Recreation Area sits on the western shore of one of the largest lakes in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, a 4,017-acre body of water that serves as the headwaters of the Wisconsin River and extends into Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The lake's name, often translated as Lake of the Desert, actually derives from Canadian-French meaning an old clearing, referring to cultivation by native Chippewa people on the lake's islands. This area has been home to the Ojibwa for centuries. The campground offers 31 non-reservable campsites nestled in a pine and hardwood forest, all available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites accommodate RVs and trailers, with most sites accepting rigs up to 40 feet and some up to 35 feet. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and parking spur. The campground provides potable water and vault toilets. An on-site boat landing makes lake access convenient for anglers and boaters. Lac Vieux Desert is renowned for its fishing opportunities, particularly for musky, walleye, bass, and northern pike. Because the lake straddles the Wisconsin-Michigan border, anglers should review border lake fishing regulations before casting a line. The campground also features a picnic shelter and serves as a peaceful base for exploring the surrounding national forest.
