Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.
About
Kegan Creek Cabin offers a primitive wilderness lodging experience in the heart of Prince of Wales Island's Tongass National Forest. This 12x12 foot pan-abode style cedar log cabin sits on Kegan Creek near the outlet of Kegan Lake, surrounded by Sitka spruce and western hemlock forest approximately half a mile from a saltwater cove on Moira Sound. The cabin accommodates up to six people with wooden bunkbeds (no mattresses provided), a wood table with benches, a cooking bench, and a wood stove for heat. An outhouse is located outside, and a rowboat with oars is provided for exploring the lake and nearby waters. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, fuel, firewood or biobricks, food, water, and all other personal gear. Water can be sourced from Kegan Creek but must be treated before drinking. The location is prime for anglers targeting salmon runs in Kegan Creek, as well as rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, dolly varden, and various salmon species in the surrounding lakes, streams, and ponds. A half-mile trail along Kegan Creek connects the cabin to both Kegan Cove and Kegan Lake, providing excellent opportunities to observe fish and wildlife. Black bears are frequently seen near the creek during salmon runs, and eagles, gulls, and various other birds are common. Beachcombing at low tide along the cove reveals tidal flats with rocks and sea-treasures. Access requires careful planning as the site is reached by float plane at high tide (30 air miles from Ketchikan, 51 from Craig) or by boat followed by the half-mile hike. Weather conditions can cause extended stays, and winter access can be challenging due to snow and ice.
Directions
Access is by float plane at high tide (30 air miles from Ketchikan, 51 air miles from Craig) or by boat to Kegan Cove followed by a half-mile hike. A mooring buoy is available in the bay on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer to USGS Craig A-1 map. Winter access can be difficult due to snow and ice.
