About
Kegan Cove Cabin offers visitors a unique wilderness lodging experience on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Built in 2010 by a volunteer crew, this 16x18-foot yellow cedar and Sitka spruce log cabin sits in a protected saltwater cove on Moira Sound, surrounded by coastal Sitka spruce and western hemlock forest. The cabin is equipped with wooden bunkbeds for up to six people, a wood stove for heat, a table, benches, cooking counter, shelves, cupboard space, and an outhouse. The location is prime for anglers, with both saltwater and freshwater fishing available. Salmon runs draw anglers and black bears to nearby Kegan Creek, while rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, dolly varden, char, and salmon populate the area's lakes, streams, and ponds. An easy half-mile trail along Kegan Creek connects the cove to Kegan Lake. The site is accessible only by boat or float plane at high tide, located 30 air miles from Ketchikan and 51 air miles from Craig. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. At low tide, a 100-foot tidal flat emerges in front of the cabin. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with eagles, shorebirds, Sitka black-tailed deer, and black bears commonly seen. Visitors must be self-sufficient, bringing their own water, food, sleeping bags, cooking gear, and supplies for 2-5 extra days in case of weather delays.
