About
Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area encompasses 1,365 acres of diverse terrain in Henry County, combining rolling hardwood-covered hills in the south with flatter grasslands to the north. The centerpiece is a 58-acre lake offering fishing and boating along nearly 2.5 miles of shoreline. The park honors both State Senator Frank P. Johnson and the historic Sauk Trail used by Native American tribes including the Sauk, Fox, Winnebago, and Kickapoo. Chief Keokuk Campground provides 70 Class A sites with 30-amp electric service suitable for RVs and tents, plus 25 Class C tent-only sites accessible only on foot. Four campsites are ADA-accessible with concrete pads. A shower building with accessible restrooms and showers operates seasonally, along with a dump station and potable water. Vault toilets with concrete pathways remain available throughout the grounds. The Black Hawk Group Area accommodates organized youth and adult groups during the May through October season. Chief Tecumseh Cabin, a primitive heated cabin sleeping six and overlooking the lake, is available year-round. Reservations are handled through ExploreMoreIL. Ryan's Round Barn offers guided tours on select Saturdays from May through September.
