About

Humpback Lake Cabin is a remote wilderness retreat located within Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness in the Tongass National Forest. This rustic 12x14-foot Pan Abode cabin, constructed in 1979, sits along the shores of glacier-carved Humpback Lake, offering stunning views of surrounding alpine peaks with dramatic granite walls. The cabin sleeps six people and features two single bunks, two double bunks, a cooking counter, table, shelving, and cupboard space. A wood stove provides heat, though guests must bring their own firewood or biobricks as supply is not guaranteed. The cabin is accessible only by floatplane, located approximately 48 air miles southeast of Ketchikan. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for exploring the lake; guests must bring their own life jackets. From the cabin, visitors can row to the Humpback Creek Trailhead for a scenic 3-mile hike to Mink Bay at saltwater. Humpback Lake offers excellent fishing for Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout. The surrounding old-growth forest of Sitka spruce, cedar, and western hemlock provides habitat for brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, martens, and moose. Guests should be aware of the large brown bear population and take appropriate precautions. A commercial lodge is located at the southeast end of the lake.

Directions

Accessible only by floatplane, approximately 48 air miles southeast of Ketchikan, east of Mink Bay on the mainland. Helicopter access is illegal in this designated Wilderness area. The Humpback Trail does NOT access the cabin. Refer to USGS map Ketchikan A-2.
