About
Humpback Lake Cabin offers a secluded wilderness experience in the heart of Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, approximately 48 air miles southeast of Ketchikan. This rustic 12' x 14' Pan Abode cabin was constructed in 1979 and provides spectacular views of the glacier-carved lake and surrounding high alpine peaks with sheer granite walls. The landscape is covered in lush old-growth forest of Sitka spruce, cedar, and western hemlock. The cabin accommodates up to 6 guests with two single bunks and two double bunks. It features an oil stove (requiring #1 diesel fuel, not provided), cooking counter, table, shelves, cupboard space, and a broom. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is available at the cabin for exploring the lake and accessing the Humpback Creek Trailhead. The trailhead is located at the north edge of a large log jam near the west end of the lake and offers a scenic 3-mile hike to Mink Bay at saltwater. The lake provides excellent fishing opportunities for Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout. This area is home to a large population of brown bears, along with Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, martens, moose, and various waterfowl. A commercial lodge is located at the southeast end of the lake. The cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, accessible only by floatplane. Guests must bring their own life jackets, fuel for heating, and be prepared for wilderness conditions.
Directions
Located approximately 48 air miles southeast of Ketchikan, east of Mink Bay on the mainland. Accessible only by floatplane; the Humpback Trail does NOT access the cabin. Refer to USGS map Ketchikan A-2. In a designated Wilderness area, helicopter access is illegal.
