About

Heron Lake State Park sits at high elevation among tall pines and scenic cliffs in Rio Arriba County, northern New Mexico. The reservoir is designated as a quiet no-wake lake, creating ideal conditions for sailing, fishing, and paddle sports. The park features approximately 250 campsites spread across multiple loops including the Blanco Electric loop and primitive camping areas. Some sites can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet with pull-through options available. The lake is known for record-size trout, and ice fishing is popular in winter months. Additional recreational opportunities include hiking trails, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. The park includes a visitor center with exhibits and interpretive programs. Showers and flush toilets are available seasonally, with vault toilets accessible year-round.
