About
Heinrude Dispersed Camp South Point is a designated dispersed camping area within the 2.4-million-acre Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana. Located in Flathead County, this primitive camping site offers backcountry camping experiences without the infrastructure of developed campgrounds. Dispersed camping on the Flathead National Forest is free and available throughout the forest, with campers expected to be fully self-sufficient. This site requires campers to pack in all necessary supplies including water, and pack out all trash. No facilities are provided, so visitors must practice proper waste disposal by digging catholes at least 200 feet from water sources and packing out toilet paper. The forest requires adherence to food storage orders due to grizzly bear activity in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem. Campfires are allowed in existing fire rings when no restrictions are in place, and all fires must be completely extinguished before leaving. The maximum stay limit is 16 days within the Flathead National Forest, though some high-use areas may have shorter posted limits. Winter access may be limited by snow and road conditions. Dispersed camping is not permitted near developed recreation areas, trailheads, or day-use sites. Motorized vehicle use is restricted to designated roads shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map.
