About
Heinrude Dispersed Camp North Loop is a dispersed camping area situated within the Flathead National Forest in Flathead County, Montana, near the Hungry Horse Reservoir. This primitive camping location offers free camping in a remote mountain environment typical of northwest Montana's backcountry. The area provides no developed facilities, requiring visitors to be completely self-sufficient. As with all dispersed camping in Flathead National Forest, campers must adhere to food storage orders to minimize grizzly bear conflicts, pack out all trash, and follow Leave No Trace principles. The maximum stay limit is 16 days, though some areas near water may have shorter posted limits. Campers should use existing fire rings when available and ensure fires are completely extinguished. Dispersed camping is not permitted near developed recreation areas, trailheads, or day-use sites. Access to this area typically involves forest roads that may be gated or impassable during winter months due to snow. The Heinrude area is located along the Hungry Horse Reservoir corridor, where road conditions can be challenging in winter. Visitors should check current road status and be prepared for primitive conditions without water, restrooms, or trash services.
Directions
Heinrude Dispersed Camp North Loop is accessed via the Mountain Loop Highway from Darrington. Look for pull-in sites off the highway in the forest near the South Fork Stillaguamish River and Big Four Mountain. There is no formal signage, so watch for established pull-outs and campsites along the loop.
