Heinrude Dispersed Camp South Loop is a dispersed camping area located within the 2.4-million-acre Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana. As a dispersed site, it offers primitive camping with no developed amenities, providing campers with a true backcountry experience. The site is accessible via forest roads and is typical of dispersed camping opportunities throughout the Flathead National Forest. Campers must be completely self-sufficient, as there are no water sources, restrooms, trash collection, or other facilities. The site is free to use and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Visitors are required to follow the forest's food storage order to minimize bear conflicts, pack out all trash, and adhere to the 16-day maximum stay limit. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally, and campers should use existing fire rings when available.
Directions
Heinrude Dispersed Camp South Loop is located near Darrington, Washington along the Mountain Loop Highway. From Darrington, drive south on the Mountain Loop Highway for approximately 25 miles. Look for dispersed campsites on the right, before major creek crossings, and be aware that these are primitive sites without resort-style signage.
