About

Forest Dispersed Camp Southeast is situated in the expansive Flathead National Forest, approximately 2.4 million acres of pristine wilderness in northwestern Montana. This dispersed camping area provides free camping opportunities for those seeking a more primitive and secluded experience away from developed campgrounds. The location offers access to the natural beauty of the northern Rocky Mountains, with opportunities for solitude and outdoor recreation. Dispersal camping in the Flathead National Forest is permitted almost everywhere outside of developed recreation areas, trailheads, and day-use sites. Campers must adhere to the forest's food storage order to prevent wildlife conflicts, particularly with bears. The maximum stay limit is 16 days. Users should practice Leave No Trace principles, use existing fire rings when available, and ensure all fires are completely extinguished before leaving. This location requires complete self-sufficiency. There are no amenities, facilities, or services provided. Campers must bring all necessary water, pack out all trash, and properly dispose of human waste using catholes dug at least 200 feet from water sources. The main camping season in Flathead National Forest runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, though dispersed camping may be accessible at other times depending on road conditions and snow levels.
