About

Heinrude Dispersed Camp South Beach is a free dispersed camping area situated along the shores of Hungry Horse Reservoir in the Flathead National Forest of Montana. This primitive site offers campers a chance to experience the forest in a more natural setting, away from developed campgrounds. The area provides access to the reservoir and is surrounded by the scenic Rocky Mountains west of the Continental Divide. As a dispersed camping site, there are no developed amenities such as water, restrooms, or trash service. Campers must be self-sufficient and follow Leave No Trace principles. All visitors must adhere to the forest's food storage orders to prevent bear encounters. The maximum stay limit is 16 days, and groups over 75 people are not permitted. Campers should use existing fire rings when available and ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving. Access may be limited during winter months due to snow and road conditions. The area is part of the vast Flathead National Forest, which offers dispersed camping throughout most of its lands on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.

Directions

From the Redwood Creek Trailhead, hike 1.5 miles upstream (south) along Redwood Creek to reach the allowed dispersed camping area. The trailhead is located south-east of Orick, CA, and offers parking for trail access. Note that camping is permitted only on the gravel bars south of McArthur Creek.
