Open for the 2026 season. Isle Royale operates April 16 through October 31 annually. Individual sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. About

Hatchet Lake Campground sits on the shores of Hatchet Lake in the interior of Isle Royale, one of America's most remote national parks. The campground is reached via the Hatchet Lake Trail, which connects the Minong Ridge Trail to the Greenstone Ridge Trail. This location makes it a strategic overnight stop for backpackers traversing the island's main ridgeline routes. The campground features 8 tent sites: 5 individual sites available first-come, first-served, and 3 group sites that require advance reservation for parties of 7 or more. Seasonal composting toilets and food storage lockers are provided. Water is available but non-potable and must be treated before drinking. The terrain is uneven and rough throughout, with no accessible facilities. As with all Isle Royale backcountry campgrounds, campers must use self-contained stoves only as open fires are prohibited. All trash must be packed out. Pets are not allowed anywhere in the park. A free overnight permit is required for all campers and must be obtained upon arrival at Rock Harbor or Windigo.

Directions

Hatchet Lake Campground is accessible only by foot. From Todd Harbor, take the Hatchet Lake Trail (2.3 miles) which connects the Minong Ridge Trail to the Greenstone Ridge Trail. The campground is located near the center of the island. Ferry service to Isle Royale departs from Houghton or Copper Harbor, MI, or Grand Portage, MN.
