About
Located within the Sheyenne National Grassland three miles northwest of Hankinson, North Dakota, Hankinson Hills Campground provides a semi-primitive camping experience on the prairie. The campground features 15 campsites arranged in two distinct loops: six designated equestrian sites for campers with horses, and nine sites for non-equestrian campers. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and parking pad. The facility includes three vault toilets, a hand pump providing potable water during warmer months, and a large picnic shelter available for day use and group events on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground serves as a trailhead for the 8-mile Hankinson Hills Trail loop, which winds through oak forest and prairie landscapes. Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking on roads, wildlife viewing, and wildflower identification. The area is home to diverse bird populations including pileated woodpeckers, barred owls, and during migration periods, swans, geese, and cranes. White-tailed deer, coyotes, wild turkeys, and other prairie wildlife are commonly spotted. Pack-in, pack-out rules apply, and all sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations.
