About
Hankinson Hills Campground is a rustic prairie camping destination within the Sheyenne National Grassland, managed by the Dakota Prairie Grasslands district of the USFS. Located three miles northwest of Hankinson, North Dakota, the campground sits among rolling oak-studded hills and native tallgrass prairie. The campground is divided into two loops with 15 total sites. Sites 1-9 accommodate standard campers, while sites 10-15 are designated for equestrian use, allowing campers to bring horses. All sites are primitive with no hookups, but each includes a picnic table and fire ring. Three vault toilets serve the campground, and two hand-pump wells provide seasonal potable water from spring through fall. A large covered picnic shelter is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis for day use and group gatherings. The 8-mile Hankinson Hills Trail loop, a graveled multi-use path for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, is accessible directly from the campground. Wildlife viewing and wildflower identification are popular activities in this relatively undiscovered corner of the northern Great Plains.
