Noted for its cool, spring-fed waters, Pickerel Lake is one of the deepest natural lakes in the state. The 955-acre lake bears an American Indian name meaning "where you spear long fish." Visitors to the Pickerel Lake Recreation Area can try their hand at reeling in a catch, as well as swimming, hiking and other outdoor activities. Choose from among the options of an electrical or basic campsite, or a snug one-room cabin. The log-style cabins are open year-round, with air conditioning and heating to keep the indoor temperature comfortable. Each is furnished with beds for four people (a set of bunk beds and a double bed), table and benches. You'll be able to use the fire grate and picnic table for dining outdoors. If you're at Pickerel Lake Recreation Area fishing for walleye, northern pike, crappie, perch and bass, the fishing dock, fish-cleaning station and fishing pole checkout will come in handy. Canoes and kayaks can be rented, and games are available for use at the park. A hike on the Glacial Mounds Trail shows several examples of how glaciers formed the landscape of the area, and the Ponderosa trail provides visitors with the chance to surround themselves with the delightful sight and smell of pine trees.
