Gypsum Campground is located along the Eagle River and is readily accessible from Interstate Highway 70, making it a convenient base for exploring western Colorado. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system, offering both individual sites and a group site for larger parties. The setting provides primitive walk-in fishing and camping accessed via gravel roads.
Visitors can enjoy camping, picnicking, sightseeing, and wildlife viewing directly from the campground. The Eagle River attracts diverse wildlife including ducks, geese, blue heron, bald eagles, and other raptors. Recreation activities in the area include rafting and fishing, with the floating season generally occurring during late May through July. An inactive volcanic crater and lava flow near Dotsero provide additional sightseeing opportunities.
The campground accommodates up to nine people, two vehicles, and two tents per individual site. A group site is available for up to 25 people. Stay limits vary seasonally: 7 days from May through August, and 14 days from September through November.
Directions
I-70 Exit 140 at Gypsum and turn south. Turn right on the frontage road (Old Highway 6) and go 1.5 miles past the roundabout. Take a left to the Gypsum Recreation Area.
