About

General Hitchcock Campground is a small, sheltered retreat just off the Catalina Highway at milepost 12 in the Santa Catalina Mountains. The 12 tent-only sites are nestled under a dense canopy of ponderosa pines, junipers, and oaks, with some sites positioned directly along Bear Creek among large boulders. The creek generally only flows during rainy periods or spring snowmelt, and campers should remain vigilant of flash flood potential. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Each site accommodates up to 10 persons and 2 vehicles. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Pack and saddle stock are not permitted in the campground. The setting offers a quiet mountain escape at elevation, with access to nearby hiking opportunities in the Santa Catalina Ranger District.

Directions

From Tucson, take Tanque Verde Road to Catalina Highway. Drive 4.2 miles to the Coronado National Forest boundary, then continue 12 miles to the campground on the right at milepost 12.
