About
Elkmont Group Camp is situated within the largest campground complex in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located about 8 miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee at 2,150 feet elevation. The four tent-only group sites (GP01-GP04) accommodate between 15-30 people depending on the site, with a minimum of 7 campers required. Each site features multiple tent pads, picnic tables, lantern holders, and fire rings with standup grills. The sites are accessed via short hikes from designated parking areas and offer shaded, private settings in wooded valleys and hilltops. Nearby restrooms provide flush toilets and cold-water sinks, though no showers are available. Potable water is available seasonally. Bear activity is common; all food and scented items must be stored in vehicles or sealed containers. Recreation opportunities abound with access to backcountry trout fishing in the Little River, the popular Laurel Falls Trail leading to an 80-foot waterfall, and over 800 miles of maintained trails throughout the park. Elkmont also holds historical significance as a former logging community and summer resort.
