About

Situated in Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 2,150 feet elevation, Elkmont Group Camp provides an ideal setting for group camping excursions with four tent-only sites accommodating 15-30 guests per site. Each site features picnic tables and fire rings with grills. The campground offers seasonal modern amenities including flush toilets and potable water, and provides easy access to the Little River for trout fishing. The location serves as an excellent base for exploring the Smokies, with direct access to popular trails including the Laurel Falls Trail leading to an 80-foot waterfall, as well as the Elkmont, Little River, and James Creek Trails. The area is rich in history as a former logging community and summer resort getaway, with over 90 preserved historic structures throughout the park. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with approximately 1,500 black bears and diverse wildlife calling the park home. The campground is located about 9 miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Reservations are required and can be made up to twelve months in advance through Recreation.gov. Groups must consist of at least 7 people, and the park enforces a 14-consecutive-day stay limit. Only heat-treated, certified firewood may be brought into the park, though campers may collect dead and down wood on site.

Directions

From Gatlinburg, TN: Take Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441) south into the park, turn right at Sugarlands Visitor Center, proceed 4.5 miles on Little River Road, turn left at the Elkmont Campground sign, and continue 1.5 miles to the campground office. From Cherokee, NC: Take Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441) north through the park into Tennessee, turn left at Sugarlands Visitor Center, follow Little River Road approximately 4.5 miles, turn left at the Elkmont Campground sign, and proceed 1.5 miles to the office.
