About

Denver Caboose Cabin offers a one-of-a-kind overnight experience in a retired 1960s railroad caboose from the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad. Nestled along the East Fork of the Skagway River in Tongass National Forest, the cabin features excellent views of the Sawtooth Mountains and is surrounded by spruce and hemlock rainforest. The caboose sleeps six with four single bunks and one double bunk, including an observatory penthouse bunk with all-around windows. The cabin is equipped with an oil stove for heating (guests must bring #1 stove oil, approximately 1 gallon per day), tables with benches, a cooking counter, food cupboard, and an outhouse. There is no potable water or electricity; water must be brought in or treated from a nearby stream. A campfire ring is available outside. The 4.5-mile Denver Glacier Trail begins at the cabin site, following the river with scenic overlooks. Black bears and moose are common in the area, and mountain goats can often be spotted on surrounding slopes with binoculars. The terrain is rugged and brushy, suited for experienced backcountry travelers prepared for remote wilderness conditions.

Directions

The cabin is approximately 5.5 miles north of Skagway along the East Fork of the Skagway River, beside the railroad tracks at the Denver Glacier Trailhead. Access is exclusively via the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, operating May 1 through September 30. Make train reservations at least 24 hours in advance by calling (800) 343-7373.
