Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK

February 8th, 1:57 PM — 4:00 PM

After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About

Dyea Campground offers a peaceful retreat in the trees along the banks of the Taiya River, 9 miles from downtown Skagway. This primitive National Park Service campground serves as a gateway to both history and adventure, located within a short distance of the historic Dyea townsite and just half a mile from the renowned Chilkoot Trailhead. The site preserves the memory of the Klondike Gold Rush, when thousands of stampeders passed through this area in the late 1890s. The campground features 22 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations accepted. Amenities are limited but functional, including seasonal vault toilets, fire rings at each site, picnic tables, food storage lockers, and seasonal trash collection. Campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. Several sites feature wheelchair accessible picnic tables, and the campground surfaces are mostly flat, unpaved gravel. The campground is monitored by National Park Service rangers during the operating season. Due to its location at the end of Lynn Canal, the campground can experience high winds and variable weather conditions. Campers should be prepared for three-season camping even in summer. Large RVs and trailers over 26 feet may have difficulty crossing the bridge over the Taiya River and are restricted from travel across federal lands in Dyea except with advance approval from the Superintendent. The nightly fee is $10 per site, and camping is limited to 14 days per calendar year.

Directions

Located 9 miles from Skagway via the Dyea Road, which branches off the Klondike Highway just north of town. The campground is 0.5 miles from the Chilkoot Trailhead. Note that vehicles over 26 feet are restricted and large RVs/trailers may have difficulty crossing the Taiya River bridge.
