About

Finnegan's Point serves as the first backcountry campground for hikers tackling the historic Chilkoot Trail, positioned at mile marker 4.8 along this legendary Gold Rush route. The campground sits on the east side of the trail, uphill from the Taiya River, offering a strategic stopping point for backpackers beginning their multi-day trek. On clear days, campers are rewarded with views of the Irene Glacier, a hanging glacier visible across the river valley. The campground provides 6 reservable sites equipped with essential amenities including vault toilets, non-potable water, food storage lockers for bear-safe food storage, and a warming shelter with a stove where fires are permitted. Backpacking stoves can be used inside or outside the shelter. The site serves hikers pursuing the challenging 33-mile trail that follows the route taken by thousands of prospectors during the 1897-1898 Klondike Gold Rush. All overnight camping on the U.S. side of the Chilkoot Trail requires a backcountry permit purchased from the Chilkoot Trail Center in Skagway. When making reservations, hikers must designate which campgrounds they will use, though specific campsites within each campground are not pre-assigned. The trail attracts thousands of international visitors annually who come to experience both the spectacular wilderness scenery and rich historical significance of this National Historic Trail.
