Hikers taking a break at Finnegan's Point
Open

Open for the 2026 season. Backcountry permits are required June 1 through September 12 and must be reserved via Recreation.gov. In-person orientation at the Trail Center in Skagway is mandatory before departing. The international border at Chilkoot Pass remains closed to through travel; out-and-back hiking only.

About

Finnegan's Point marks the first overnight stop for hikers heading north on the legendary Chilkoot Trail in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Situated at mile 5 (kilometer 8) at an elevation of 249 feet, this backcountry campground sits above the Taiya River with views of the Irene Glacier on clear days. The campground features six 10x10-foot wooden tent platforms that can accommodate multiple tents each. A canvas-walled warming shelter with a wood-burning stove provides refuge from inclement weather. Bear boxes and a bear pole are available for food storage, and a pit-style outhouse serves as the toilet facility. Water must be filtered from the Taiya River due to sediment and potential contamination. Finnegan's Point is a practical choice for hikers starting late in the day from Dyea. Overnight camping requires a backcountry permit ($20 per trip) obtained through Recreation.gov between June 1 and September 12. In 2026, crossing the international border at Chilkoot Pass is prohibited, so hikers must complete out-and-back trips on the U.S. side.

Directions

Finnegan's Point is located at mile marker 4.8 (kilometer 7.7) on the Chilkoot Trail. Access the trail from the Dyea trailhead, approximately 9 miles northwest of Skagway. The campground is on the east side of the trail, uphill from the Taiya River.
