About
Crocker Guard Station served as a home for Forest Service personnel from 1912 until the 1980s, when it was staffed as a fire station. Refurbished by volunteers in 2011, this unique historic cabin is now available for rental and makes an ideal setting for family gatherings, weddings, or special events. The cabin features four bedrooms with ten twin beds (including two sets of bunks), a kitchen, dining room, and living room. Maximum occupancy is 16 people with parking for 4 vehicles. The guard station is situated in a serene aspen grove next to a meadow at 5,700 feet elevation, ten miles northeast of Portola, California. There is no electricity or potable water; visitors must bring their own drinking water. A hand pump is available for fire protection only. An outside vault toilet building is provided. Campfires are not permitted at the guard station, but a propane barbecue is available (bring your own propane). Lake Davis Recreation Area is within three miles, offering fishing, boating, swimming, biking, and hiking. The adjacent Crocker Campground is free and has ten sites with tables, fire rings, and vault toilets for those wanting campfire access or additional camping space. Portola, with stores, restaurants, and the Western Pacific Railroad Museum, is just ten miles away.
Directions
From Portola, travel east on Highway 70 for five miles to Beckwourth. Travel north on County Road 111 (Beckwourth-Genesee Road) for approximately 4.6 miles. Turn right at the Crocker Campground dirt road access and enter through the closed gate (combination lock required).
