About
Columbus Belmont State Park is a 156-acre historic site perched on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, offering a unique combination of Civil War history and modern camping amenities. The park marks the location of a Confederate fortification built in 1861, later known as the Gibraltar of the West, and was the site of the Battle of Belmont, General Ulysses S. Grant's first battle in the Western Campaign. The campground operates year-round with 38 spacious, shaded sites situated on the scenic river bluff. All sites come equipped with water and electric hookups, while 11 sites also feature sewer connections. Each campsite includes a patio, fire ring, and picnic table. The campground includes modern amenities such as a bathhouse with restrooms, laundry facilities, and a dump station. Additional overflow sites are available for special events and high-demand periods. Beyond camping, visitors can explore the park's Civil War museum, hike trails through historic earthworks, view the massive anchor and chain that was once stretched across the Mississippi River, and enjoy recreational activities including miniature golf and a seasonal snack bar. The park serves as one of two Kentucky Interpretive Centers for the Great River Road, offering interpretive displays and educational programs about the region's rich history. The campground's location provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and photography along the Mississippi River.
