About

Chapel Beach Campground is located on a sand bluff overlooking Chapel Beach and Lake Superior in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The campground features six individual backpacking sites that are accessible only by hiking trail, requiring a backcountry camping permit reserved through Recreation.gov. Because Chapel Beach is a popular day use area, these sites experience more foot traffic and offer less solitude compared to other backcountry locations within the lakeshore. The campground provides a shared seasonal vault toilet and non-potable water from Chapel Creek and Lake Superior, which must be treated before use. Kayakers can access Lake Superior directly from the beach. The site includes seasonal food storage lockers to protect gear from wildlife. No campfires are permitted at this location; campers must use portable stoves for cooking. Winter camping is permitted year-round at designated backcountry sites with advance reservations. Winter access requires hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing through potentially deep snow, and locating sites may require GPS coordinates. Campers pay $5 per person per night plus a $15 non-refundable reservation fee per permit, with a maximum stay of three consecutive nights at any backcountry campground and no more than 14 total days per calendar year in the lakeshore.
