Special Weather Statement issued May 22 at 3:49AM EDT by NWS Marquette MI
Gusty southeast winds as high as 20 to locally 25 mph, combined with dry conditions will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across most of Upper Michigan away from the shorelines of the Great Lakes. Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires to local emergency services by calling 911. Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.
About
Chapel Beach Campground offers backcountry camping on the sand bluffs overlooking Lake Superior and iconic Chapel Rock at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The six numbered individual sites accommodate groups of 1-6 people with a maximum of 3 tents or hammocks per site. Each site has a bear-proof food storage locker, and a shared vault toilet serves the campground seasonally. Reaching the campground requires a 3-mile hike from Chapel trailhead along the North Country National Scenic Trail. Water must be filtered or treated from Chapel Creek or Lake Superior as no potable water is available. Campfires are prohibited at Chapel Beach, so bring a camp stove for cooking. Pets are not allowed on trails in the Chapel area. A backcountry camping permit is required year-round for all overnight stays. Permits are available through Recreation.gov with a $15 reservation fee plus $5 per person per night. Campers are limited to 3 consecutive nights at any backcountry campground and 14 total nights per calendar year within the lakeshore backcountry. Pack out all trash.
