About
Mosquito River Individual Backpacking Sites is a backcountry campground located within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Perched on the east side of the Mosquito River high above Lake Superior, this remote destination offers five individual campsites that provide a true wilderness experience. Depending on your chosen campsite, you'll be treated to the sounds of waves crashing against the dramatic sandstone cliffs or the peaceful flow of the Mosquito River as it empties into Lake Superior. Accessible only by hiking or paddling, this campground requires advance reservations and a backcountry camping permit year-round. The site features a shared vault toilet (seasonal availability) and access to non-potable water from both the Mosquito River and Lake Superior, which must be treated before use. Lake Superior access makes this an ideal stop for kayakers exploring the shoreline. The campground accommodates groups of 1-6 people with a maximum of 2 tents or hammocks per site, and visitors are limited to three consecutive nights at this location. Food storage lockers are provided seasonally to protect against wildlife. Important to note: campfires are strictly prohibited at Mosquito River Campground, so visitors must bring camping stoves for cooking. Winter camping is permitted at this site, though it requires significant preparation including snowshoeing or skiing to reach the campground through deep snow. The remote location, stunning lakeside setting, and pristine backcountry environment make Mosquito River an exceptional destination for experienced backpackers and paddlers seeking solitude along one of the Great Lakes' most beautiful shorelines.
