About

Canyon Creek Campground offers a truly remote camping experience in the Tahoe National Forest, located along Canyon Creek near Faucherie Reservoir. This primitive campground features 20 campsites nestled in a mixed conifer forest, providing a secluded retreat for experienced campers seeking solitude. The campground includes vault toilets, bear-proof food lockers, and paved parking at individual sites, but operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash service or potable water. Access to Canyon Creek Campground requires significant planning and a capable vehicle. The final approach involves approximately 16 miles from Highway 20, starting with 8 miles of paved road, transitioning to 3 miles of narrow gravel, and culminating in 5 miles of very rough, rocky, single-lane forest road. High clearance is mandatory, and trailers or low-clearance vehicles are not recommended. The challenging access keeps usage light and maintains the area's primitive character. The campground operates seasonally, typically from June through October when snow conditions permit. Campers must treat or filter water from Canyon Creek for drinking. The area offers opportunities for mountain biking, fishing at nearby Faucherie Reservoir, non-motorized boating, swimming, and access to backcountry hiking trails. The 14-day stay limit and first-come, first-served policy underscore the campground's rustic, self-sufficient nature.

Directions

From Nevada City: Take Highway 20 east towards Truckee approximately 20 miles. Turn left on Bowman Lake Road (Forest Road 18). First 8 miles are paved, next 3 miles are gravel (1.5 lanes), last 5 miles are very rough and road is one lane. Continue past Jackson Creek Campground for 5 miles southeast on Forest Road 843-037. High clearance vehicle required; trailers not recommended.
