About

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Campground offers a quiet desert camping experience at 3,300 feet elevation in the Tonto National Forest. The 10 sites are spread out among large sycamore trees that provide welcome shade in the desert climate. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground serves as a base for exploring the Cave Creek Riparian Ecosystem, with the trailhead just steps away. The area is renowned for bird watching. OHV routes are accessible from the area, and the nearby towns of Carefree and Cave Creek offer additional services. Access requires navigating Cave Creek Road (FR 24), where the last 9 miles is a narrow all-weather gravel road with blind curves. This terrain makes the campground unsuitable for trailers over 16 feet. Payment is via QR code scan with the Recreation.gov app or at the fee machine at Cave Creek Ranger Station.

Directions

From Carefree, take Cave Creek Road/Forest Road 24 north for 20 miles. The last 9 miles is a narrow all-weather gravel road with blind curves. Not recommended for trailers over 16 feet.
