About
Civilian Conservation Corps Campground sits along Cave Creek, 20 miles north of Carefree in the Tonto National Forest. The campground features spread-out sites shaded by large sycamore trees in a riparian setting. Each site includes a picnic table and firepit with cooking grate. The Cave Creek Trailhead is located nearby, providing access to hiking along the Cave Creek Riparian Ecosystem. The campground is popular for bird watching, creek access, and as a basecamp for exploring OHV routes in the area. The setting provides a cooler escape from Phoenix heat with plentiful shade and a clear running creek. Access requires driving 9 miles on an all-weather gravel road (Forest Road 24) that is narrow with blind curves. This is a first-come, first-served facility with no advance reservations. Payment is $16 per night via the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay feature using a QR code on-site, or at the Tonto Fee Machine Pass at Cave Creek Ranger Station. Interagency Senior/Access Pass holders receive 50% discount. The 14-day stay limit applies, and trailers over 16 feet are not recommended.
Directions
From Carefree, take Cave Creek Road/Forest Road 24 north for 20 miles. The last 9 miles is an all-weather gravel road that is narrow with blind curves. Not recommended for trailers over 16 feet.
