About

Breckenridge Campground offers a quiet, primitive camping experience on Breckenridge Mountain in the southern portion of Sequoia National Forest. At 6,600 feet elevation, it provides a cooler escape from the hot Central Valley below and serves as a base for camping, hunting, or exploring the surrounding forest. The campground has vault toilets and picnic tables but no potable water, so campers must bring all their drinking water and pack out all trash. Access is via Breckenridge Road from Bakersfield, which is paved but narrow across most of its length. The final approach to the campground uses dirt forest roads. Due to the access roads and rustic nature of the sites, the campground is not suitable for trailers or large vehicles. Campfire permits are required for campfires, barbecues, and camp stoves, available free online at readyforwildfire.org or from the Kern River Ranger District office. The surrounding Breckenridge area includes several trails such as Mill Creek Trail and Remington Ridge Trail for hiking and exploring. Usage is typically light, making this a good option for those seeking solitude away from the more popular destinations in Sequoia National Forest.

Directions

From Bakersfield, go 30 miles east on Breckenridge Road (County Road 218/Forest Road 28S06). Breckenridge Road is paved all the way across Breckenridge Mountain but is narrow in most areas. Roads that fork off of Breckenridge Road are dirt forest roads, including the road to the campground.
