About
Beaver Brook Shelter sits at 3,750 feet elevation on the northern flank of Asquam Ridge, which extends east from Mount Moosilauke. Located 1.5 miles from NH Route 112 in Kinsman Notch, the shelter is accessed via the Beaver Brook Trail, a notoriously steep section of the Appalachian Trail known for its challenging rock scrambles and significant elevation gain. The shelter accommodates approximately 8 people and features 3 overflow tent sites for additional camping capacity. A composting privy is provided, and water is available from a small stream accessed via a short side trail, though this source may not be reliable during dry periods. The site offers sweeping views of the White Mountains to the north, making it a popular stop for AT thru-hikers and section hikers. This is a primitive backcountry site with no fee required. Campers should be prepared for winter conditions from late fall through early spring, including snow and ice on the steep access trail. Following Leave No Trace principles is essential, and all waste must be packed out.
Directions
From Route 112 in Kinsman Notch, take the Beaver Brook Trail (Appalachian Trail) south for 1.5 miles. The trail is extremely steep with significant rock scrambles.
