Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME

2:21 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Lafayette Place Campground is the camping and hiking hub of Franconia Notch State Park, nestled within the dramatic glacially-carved notch in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The campground provides 97 wooded sites spread across several loops, including tent-only sites, pop-up/tent sites, standard sites, and four platform tent sites. Every site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and parking spur, with comfort stations offering flush toilets and coin-operated showers. The campground operates from late May through mid-October with full staffing and facilities. Of the 97 sites, 88 are reservable through ReserveAmerica, one is reserved for youth groups, and seven are held for first-come-first-served campers. Winter camping is technically possible but comes with closed comfort stations, no water service, and potential gate closures. This location is ideal for hikers targeting the Franconia Ridge traverse, Mount Lafayette, and other high peaks, with trailheads accessible directly from the campground. The park also offers the Flume Gorge, Echo Lake, and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway nearby. Cell service is limited to nonexistent; a pay phone with 911 capability is located at the visitor center. Firewood must be purchased on-site to prevent invasive pest spread.
