About

Bay of Pillars Shelter is a three-sided Adirondack-style emergency shelter situated approximately three miles northeast of Point Ellis on the south side of Bay of Pillars on Kuiu Island in the Tongass National Forest. Like other Adirondack shelters in the Tongass, it provides basic overnight protection from the elements for backcountry travelers. This is a remote, primitive facility with no amenities. Potable water is not available and there are no restrooms on site. Visitors must bring all supplies including drinking water and must pack out all trash. The shelter is free to use on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required or accepted. Access to Bay of Pillars Shelter is by boat or floatplane only, as Kuiu Island has no road connections. The area offers opportunities for non-motorized boating, wildlife viewing, and exploring the remote wilderness of Southeast Alaska. Usage is typically light due to the remote location.
