About

Bagley Rapids Recreation Area is a 36-site rustic campground nestled along the Oconto River in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. About one-third of the campsites are located directly adjacent to the river, offering the soothing sound of flowing water. The campground serves as an excellent base camp for exploring area trails and attractions. Recreational opportunities include trout fishing in the Oconto River, rafting and canoeing through scenic rapids, swimming, and berry picking. The Oconto River canoe trail offers areas of quiet water interspersed with shallow rapids, though caution is advised near Bagley Rapids due to fast water and rocky conditions. Mountain biking is available on the 2-mile Boulder Lake Trail accessible from several points in the campground. Nearby attractions include the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower, built in 1935 and listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the forest. Cathedral Pines, a 40-acre grove of old-growth white pine and hemlock that escaped logging in the 1900s, is also nearby. The small town of Mountain is just 5 minutes away for camping supplies and firewood.
