About

Backpacking at Great Sand Dunes National Park offers two distinct wilderness experiences. The most popular option is camping in the 30-square-mile dunefield, where 20 non-designated sites are available beyond the major dune ridgeline, requiring a minimum 1.5-mile hike over soft sand. Campers enjoy wide open views of starry skies and unique moonlit nights on North America's tallest dunes. Alternatively, 7 designated sites along the Sand Ramp Trail provide a forested experience in mixed conifer habitat at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with views of the dunes. All backpacking requires an advance permit through Recreation.gov ($6 fee). Maximum group size is 6 people with 2 vehicles per permit. Gas stoves only; campfires prohibited except in the metal fire ring at Sand Creek site. Sand stakes or sandbags essential for securing tents due to frequent high winds. Summer sand surface temperatures can reach 150°F. Water sources are seasonal; bring at least 1 gallon per person per night. Dogs not permitted in dunes backcountry.

Directions

Access via CO Highway 150 from the south or County Road 6 from the west (both paved). Park at assigned trailhead parking lot (Dunes Parking Lot, Sand Pit, or Castle Creek). Hike minimum 1.5 miles over soft sand to reach backcountry dunes sites, or use Sand Ramp Trail for designated forest sites.
