About
Located 14 miles southwest of Lake City at 9,500 feet above sea level, Mill Creek Campground is nestled along the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The campground features 22 campsites suitable for tents and medium-sized RVs, with 13 reservable sites and 9 first-come, first-served sites. Each site includes a metal fire ring with cooking grate, picnic table, and bear-proof food storage box. The campground is surrounded by the Redcloud Peak and Handies Peak Wilderness Study Areas, offering world-class hiking opportunities including trails to three 14,000-foot peaks. Licensed OHV and high-clearance 4x4 vehicles can access the legendary Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway directly from the campground, a rugged 65-mile road system connecting Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray through spectacular mountain scenery. Shaded campsites are set among mixed spruce, fir, and aspen forest with views of Colorado's highest peaks. The nearby Lake Fork of the Gunnison River offers excellent fly fishing opportunities, and a fishing access trail is available from the campground. Lake San Cristobal, Colorado's second-largest natural lake, is a short drive away and provides additional boating and fishing opportunities.
Directions
From Lake City, take Highway 149 south for about 2 miles. Turn right onto County Road 30 and continue for about 10.5 miles. Mill Creek Campground is on the left, over the bridge.
